Pidgin

Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. --Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Simple things are better.

Communicating to your friends at yahoo, google, msn, aol etc should not be complex. Pidgin makes it possible to integrate all the protocol in just one IM client. One interface for all make your desktop neat and clear.

A GLASS OF WINE

FROM WIKIPEDIA: Wine is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of unmodified grape juice.[1] The natural chemical balance of grapes is such that they ferment without the addition of sugars, acids, enzymes or other nutrients.
FROM WINE HQ: Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X, OpenGL, and Unix.
Think of Wine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API consisting of 100% non-Microsoft code, however Wine can optionally use native Windows DLLs if they are available. Wine provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris.

FROM ME: Thanks, there is wine. At last i can open my windows apps on linux machine. Enjoy the both linux and windows at the same time without using virtual machine or dual boot. This programs allows me to be more productive on top linux environment.

On the lighter side; I drink wine to relax. If theres no available wine then drink beer.
A glass of B**R !!!!

A week of limted internet

Limited Internet Connection

I think i cannot manage a week of no internet connection. Cannot check my mails, read slashdot and do business at the office.

I was out of town limited GSM signal and no network within the compound. Anyway i got to be busy with my codes and i need to finish the project before week end. And at last least i have plenty of time doing my research.

Wednesday afternoon Im already finish with all my work and i have plenty of time going around and touring the city and nearby places.
We go around the city then eat at German restaurant then proceed to a coastal area somewhere in the southern part of Panay island. Look at the Research Center of South East Asia for Marine Life it was indeed big area. Lots of marine life in their aquariums.

After going around the city we eat at a restaurant near the beach they call it "breakthrough " that was in villa. They serve sea foods; lobster, shrimps, fishes, oyster and lot more... it was a great meal.

Now, retire for the day! This should be posted last June 21, the birthday of Jose Rizal

Philippine Independence Day June 12 2007

I wake up very late in the morning. Thinking of something to do for a few hours before going to work for a half day duty. Then i decided to bring my computer at the shop for the replacement of the systems bus(mother board). At the SHOP, while waiting for the technician to diagnose my computer (which i already know that the system bus is busted), after performing all the necessary procedures this technician then declared that the hardware is not working and need to be replaced. So, I ask him what should be done and told him that the hardware is covered by warranty period. He then consulted the case to the management and ask what should be done. They told me that i have to wait for a period of 2-3 weeks for the replacement of the computer parts because they have to ship that parts to the supplier and fix (replace).

While waiting for the transaction to finish, i saw this one guy who wanted to recover his files from file system error (Operating System: XP Professional ntfs file system 2-pcs of more than 100GIB of hard drive) . This guy ask the other technician what to do for him to recover his files. "We have to reformat your hard drive in order for us to use our utility to recover your files", explained by this technician. Ouchhh! "Ohhh nohh" that was a big mistake and totally unacceptable for those who understand disk geometry.

From a total stranger's point of view, its a disrespect to offer a help. With hesitation i tried to get in their situation and offer a simple help. Hand him over my knoppix cd and told him to boot from cd drive and see if we can see his files. Penguin booting.....3-4 minutes before we can see the desktop. At last i can i gain access to his drive and locate his files. Then i instructed him to choose what files to be recovered and transfer to the other healthy drive. Change the drive permission to writable to that he can transfer all the recovered files. Then we wait till the process is finished.

Knoppix(GNU/Linux) once again proven its usefulness and its power. That opportunity gave Linux a boost with its capability, and a good introduction for those people who does not know anything about GNU/Linux, FLOSS (Free Libre Open Source Software).

With that event it may or may not influence the technician and the guy who sought for help but I am sure they appreciate what the good things that GNU/Linux has brought them.

Playing with 802.11 b and g

Another sleepless night thinking of unfinished project, Wireless Authentication.

State of wireless and problems

* Wireless is coming
* WEP is broken (Cracking tool)
* allow anonymous access
* Client configuration per computer

Goals
Making it simple to reduce administrative overhead, provide real security, and minimal client configuration.

Tools/Software
choose the "libre"
*nocat
*wifidog
*m0n0wall
*pfsense
*zoneCD (free edition)

Installations and configuration please refer to their respective manuals, howtos, faqs and documentations.

In the play ground i prefer to use m0n0wall because of other features (IPSEC VPN). While playing with wireless (captive portal) i also had a chance to see and work around with VPN(IPSEC) and try to test with other hardware.

For ease of installation here is a link to m0n0wall http://www.informit.com/articles/article.asp?p=704315&rl=1

Libre to

First they ignore you...
Then they laugh at you...
Then they fight you...

THEN YOU WIN.
m.k.gandhi

Isn't it great if your using opensource and libre software?
Isn't it great if you have a community of sharing?
Isn't it great if you have freedom?

Money is great! yes you can buy lot of things but how about happiness, friends, health, life?

Why do I need to buy software in the first place I dont have money? I can find free software that suite my needs.
Operating system? theres gnu/linux
Office applications? Open office my choice
....
....
And theres a lot more at SourceForge.net

Its just a matter of choice and freedom to choose.

Make it simple.
