I wake up very late in the morning. Thinking of something to do for a few hours before going to work for a half day duty. Then i decided to bring my computer at the shop for the replacement of the systems bus(mother board). At the SHOP, while waiting for the technician to diagnose my computer (which i already know that the system bus is busted), after performing all the necessary procedures this technician then declared that the hardware is not working and need to be replaced. So, I ask him what should be done and told him that the hardware is covered by warranty period. He then consulted the case to the management and ask what should be done. They told me that i have to wait for a period of 2-3 weeks for the replacement of the computer parts because they have to ship that parts to the supplier and fix (replace).
While waiting for the transaction to finish, i saw this one guy who wanted to recover his files from file system error (Operating System: XP Professional ntfs file system 2-pcs of more than 100GIB of hard drive) . This guy ask the other technician what to do for him to recover his files. "We have to reformat your hard drive in order for us to use our utility to recover your files", explained by this technician. Ouchhh! "Ohhh nohh" that was a big mistake and totally unacceptable for those who understand disk geometry.
From a total stranger's point of view, its a disrespect to offer a help. With hesitation i tried to get in their situation and offer a simple help. Hand him over my knoppix cd and told him to boot from cd drive and see if we can see his files. Penguin booting.....3-4 minutes before we can see the desktop. At last i can i gain access to his drive and locate his files. Then i instructed him to choose what files to be recovered and transfer to the other healthy drive. Change the drive permission to writable to that he can transfer all the recovered files. Then we wait till the process is finished.
Knoppix(GNU/Linux) once again proven its usefulness and its power. That opportunity gave Linux a boost with its capability, and a good introduction for those people who does not know anything about GNU/Linux, FLOSS (Free Libre Open Source Software).
With that event it may or may not influence the technician and the guy who sought for help but I am sure they appreciate what the good things that GNU/Linux has brought them.
FLOSS + LINUX + FREEDOM = Independence
"Happy Independence day to all pinoy out there"
